Choosing a good password is very important. It should be complex enough so it cannot be guessed by someone trying to break into your Sweet Briar College account, but simple enough for you to easily remember it.

Below is a list of error messages you may encounter when changing your password.

> The new password entered does not match the verification password. - When changing your password, you are asked to enter the password twice, so we can verify that you keyed it correctly (since it is not displayed while you are keying it).

> The new password entered cannot be the same as your old password. - If you are changing your password, it must be changed to something different than your current password.

> The new password entered cannot be the same as your Username. - This would make it too easy for someone to guess. Your password should be something completely different than your Username.

> The new password entered cannot be a reverse of your Username. - Your password cannot be your User ID spelled backwards. This again would be too easy for someone to guess.

> The new password entered must be at least 6 characters in length. - Passwords must be no less than 6 characters in length, and no greater than 8 characters in length.

> The new password entered must contain at least one alphabetic character. - Passwords should contain a mix of alphabetic and numeric characters to make them less easy to guess.

> The new password entered must contain at least one numeric digit or punctuation character. - Passwords should contain a mix of alphabetic and numeric characters to make them less easy to guess.

> The new password entered must not contain blanks. - Blanks are not allowed.

> The new password entered cannot be too simple of a word or combination of words and numbers. Common words such as 'password', 'SweetBriar', 'abc123', or 'alumnae' are prohibited. The password will be rejected if these words are embedded in the password in any place.

> The new password entered is too long, it cannot be over 8 characters in length. Please try again. Passwords are limited to a maximun of eight characters in length.
